Storm Water & Ground Water Management: Excessive moisture around and under buildings often attracts insects. This can result in mold, high energy costs, wood rot, and mildew. We can divert water away from the building by installing gutters, sump pumps, dry wells and adjusting grade. We also repair/replace rotted wood or insect damaged; beams, floor joists and wooden plates. We can install a Zero Perm vapor retarder with aluminum embedded strip for dirt crawl spaces, as opposed to the more commonly used 6mil plastic which is more permeable. Rigid insulation is used here to replace wet mouse riddent fiberglass insulation.Rigid is better R Value.
BEFORE: This home had improperly sized trees and shrubs encroaching upon the home causing wood rot on siding, doors, windows & trim. The single glazed, double-hung "guillotine" windows were unsafe would take a hand off if you were not careful. All of the window frames and sills were rotted and insect screens were split half screens. The bottom and top windows could not open simultaneously, preventing proper air flow.
AFTER: Installed; Maibec Nantucket pre-stained white cedar Shingles, 2 lite Energy Star Insulated Steel Door, Andersen full view self storing storm door, and Energy Star High Performance Low-E Andersen Windows. The full length screens and operable top and bottom windows allow proper air circulation reducing a/c bills and increasing comfort. Replaced rotted trim with trim painted on all 6 sides. Replaced inappropriately placed large shrubs with compact low maintenance evergreen shrubs. Installed new insulated maintenance-free garage door. Existing shutters were recycled and painted classic black to compliment the white trim. Zero VOC paints now available! *
Windows: In this project we replaced the glass in the custom shaped windows as well as the sach and hardware in the operable windows below. We also resided the walls. Here a improperly flashed deck rotted out the whole wall. We repaired rot where deck meets wall and replaced the old slider and shingles with a material that will never rot. While at it we alerted the homeowner of the opportunity to upgrade the energy rating of the slider and wall before reinstalling the door and siding. We then upgrade the R value of the insulation of the cold North wall from R11 to almost twice what the minimum energy code requires, making this a High Performance wall.
At the same time this increased the living space in a tight corner, by bumping out the slider away from the dining table enhancing the comfort and enjoyment of the home.
